Bruce Bishop (Football, 1943).
Bruce Bishop was born at Maffra, the son of Edward William Samuel Bishop and Ada Florence nee Nisbet. After attending Romsey State School he was educated at Geelong College from October, 1936 until the end of 1943. While at College he played in the 1st Football XVIII of 1942 and 1943 and the 1st Cricket XI of 1943. In 1942, he was vice-captain of the 2nd Cricket XI. Bruce was a member of Morrison House.
He enlisted in the RAN on 23 October, 1944 not long after leaving school and was posted to HMAS Hobart. On 24 April, 1945 HMAS Hobart supported landings at Tarakan in Borneo and on 11 May the landings near Wewak of elements of the Australian 6th Division. Between 7 and 9 June, Hobart participated in operations off Brunei and later at Balikpapan. On 31 August HMAS Hobart arrived at Tokyo Bay where Bruce was present at the time of the Japanese surrender.
He served as an alderman of the Gold Coast Council (1973-1988), and MLA for the Queensland State seat of Surfers Paradise for one term from 1977 to 1980, having moved to Queensland in 1959. He was a long time member of the Surfers Paradise Chamber of Commerce.
