BOYES, Nigel Irving (1906-1927)
Nigel Boyes, the son of parents Irving Charles Boyes and Blanche Compere Uther Boyes, entered the School as a boarder from Esk Farm, Longford, Tasmania. He was educated at the School from 1922 to 1923 and had previously attended Scotch College, Launceston.
His unexpected early death due to illness prompted an obituary in Pegasus in May 1927: 'Many Old Boys will learn with regret of the death, after a short illness, of Nigel Boyes (1922-23). One who knew him well writes: - ’Nigel Boyes was a personality. You could never mistake him for anyone else. He never made himself conspicuous if he could help it, but he could never help doing a friendly thing. And so, though he was not, perhaps, widely known in the school, he was well known. It was a great sorrow to his old school fellows·to hear of his sudden death.
Many of us remember a trip to Tasmania, when we were guests at Esk Farm, with its English trees and its old world courtesy. We shall not easily forget its hospitality, and our sympathy goes out to our host and hostess in their sorrow and disappointed hopes. Nigel had taken the greatest interest in the formation of a body of Light Horse in his district. It became the crack military unit of Tasmania, and was selected as an escort for the Duke of York. His fellow Light Horsemen asked that Nigel should be represented, and his horse was given a place in the escort. The Misses Boyes are presenting, in his memory, a House Cup for Athletics, to be called the ‘Nigel Boyes Memorial Cup’. In this way his name will stay for ever in the school he loved.’
The Nigel Boyes Trophy for the individual winner in field games was also named in his memory.
