BUMPSTEAD, Stephen Robert (1900-1952)


Stephen Robert Bumpstead was born in Geelong on the 23 February 1900, the son of Seaman Sydney Bumpstead and Catherine Ann nee Sabeston.

Stephen attended Flinders State School before his enrolment at Geelong College as a day student from 9 February 1914 to December 1915. At enrolment his address was listed as 88 Maude Street, Geelong.

During World War I he enlisted (No 7835) as a Private in the 11th Battalion on the 26 August 1918. He had previously tried to enlist but had been rejected due to a heart condition. He was discharged on 24 October, due to the demobilisation of the AIF. He returned to his work as an accountant after the war joining the firm Harwood and Pincott.

He married Gladys Iva Pattinson. He died in 1952.

His brother, Ewen Alexander Bumpstead (1910-1954), was also a student at Geelong College.
