BURT, Jocelyn (1940-2011)Jocelyn was born in the United Kingdom on 13 September 1940. Her father was a war correspondent, later imprisoned by the Japanese in Changi, Singapore during World War II. Jocelyn was not permitted to read her father’s war diary until 1961 when she reached 21 years of age.
Jocelyn commenced at Morongo, as a boarder when she was nine years of age, in 1949 and completed Leaving Certificate in 1957. She spent the next year at Invergowrie Homecraft Hostel in Hawthorn, together with two school friends from Morongo – Susan Ingpen and Barbara Lewis.
In 1959, she commenced Nursing training in Melbourne completing this course then following on with a Midwifery qualification. Jocelyn worked as a Nurse for some time.
She enjoyed photography and entered a photographic competition in New Zealand, which she won. This was the beginning of her future career. She subsequently bought a camper van and travelled round Australia taking photos at any time and place – whatever took her eye.
eventually becoming one of Australia’s most prominent landscape photographers. Her experiences with the land of Australia have been shared with her audiences for decades.
Jocelyn died on 24 January 2011 and is buried at Bright Cemetery, Bright in Victoria.
