CALDER, Thomas (1859-1915)


Thomas Calder, the son of a teacher, William Calder and his wife, Annie nee Rogerson, became a day student at Geelong College on 5 September 1872. No departure date is recorded for him. His address at the time of enrolment was Great Malop St, Geelong. His birth date in the College Enrolment Register is recorded as 2 November 1860 however his birth according to the official record was registered at Glenorchy District, Victoria on the 2 November 1859.

It is probably the same Thomas Calder who played football in the Victorian Football League (VFL) for the Geelong Football Club in 1886-87 and the Essendon Football Club in 1887.

The Geelong Advertiser newspaper recorded his death: 'CALDER - On the 20th April 1915, at his residence, 44 Maud Street, Geelong, Thomas, the dearly loved husband of Mary Elizabeth Calder (nee Tuson), aged 55 years. No flowers. The funeral will leave his late residence, 44 Maud Street, Geelong, this day (Wednesday), the 21st inst., at 2.30pm., for the Eastern Cemetery ... .)'


His sons, Thomas Cranmer Calder (1885-1960), Harold Wilson Calder (1894-1987), and Eric Rogerson Calder (1897-1957) were also educated at Geelong College.
