CALVERT, Alan Murray (1884-1927)


Alan Murray Calvert was born at Irrewarra Station Colac on 19 March 1884, the fifth son of John Calvert and Margaret Fair nee Chirnside, of Irrewarra. He was enrolled as a boarder at Geelong College on 17 April 1899 becoming a member of the 1st Football XVIII from 1901 to 1903 and a member of the 1st Rowing VIII of 1902.

On leaving school he joined the staff of Dalgety and Co, and studied wool classing in London and Birmingham. On his return to Australia he went into partnership on a pastoral property in NSW.

He married Joan Douglas Urquhart, daughter of Angus and Mary Urquhart, of Moondah Estate, Larpent, on 15 September 1915.

During World War I, he enlisted (No 16204) in Army Service Corps Reinforcements (Motor Transport Service), 2nd Motor Transport Company) as an AIF Driver on 21 May 1917. He embarked in Sydney on HMAT A54 Runic on 22 March 1918 and served in France and Belgium. He returned to Australia 22 April 1919 and was discharged on the 15 August 1919.

He died in Melbourne on the 9 September 1927 aged 42 and was buried at Colac Cemetery.

His brothers, Percy Norman Calvert (1886-1926), Andrew Chirnside Calvert (1882-1957), and possibly, Noel Leonard Calvert (1877-1900) also attended College.
