A F Campbell (War Service)
Allan Fairbairn, soldier, was killed in action in France during World War I.
He was the son of a former Collegian,
Archibald George Campbell (1862-1946), and Jessie Mabel nee Armytage, and was born at Ripple Vale, Birregurra on 18 May 1896. Enrolled at Geelong College on 10 April 1910, he rowed no 3 in the 1st Rowing VIII in the Head of the River of 1914. Before Geelong College he attended Ashby State School. His entry address was 'Ripple Vale', Birregurra. Allan left Geelong College in May 1913.
He was assisting his father in pastoral pursuits when he enlisted during World War I with his brother,
Ronald Keith Campbell (1895-1960), in the AIF on 2 April 1915 at the age of 18. He sailed for Egypt on
HMAT A 14 Euripides on 8 May. He survived Gallipoli then went to France, where he was killed in action at Pozieres on 3 August 1916. According to the Red Cross there was a photo of his grave held by its information bureau, but his grave could not be located, so his name is commemorated on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial, France.
His parents donated the Convalescence Ward of the newly built Geelong College Hospital in 1921, the plaque from which is held in the School Archives. His cousin,
Neil Leslie Campbell (1893-1915), memorialised at the Mercer Parade Tennis Courts, was killed at Chunuk Bair, Gallipoli in 1915.
Another brother,
Ian Armytage Campbell (1899-1983) was also educated at Geelong College.
