CHAPMAN, Dr Graeme Victor (1942-2021)

Graeme Chapman was enrolled as a boarder at The Geelong College in 1954, beginning at Form UIVA at the Preparatory School. He played in the U15 C Football team and completed his 1st grade music examinations. In his final year, he came 7th in the class, Form Remove/IVA.

Following his schooling, Graeme completed a Diploma Textile Chemistry at the Gordon Institute, followed by a Bachelor and Master of Science at the ANU, Canberra. He then completed his PhD at Medical College of Georgia, USA. During his time at Georgia, Graeme was awarded the Sigma XI prize for the best research paper.

After completing his PhD, Graeme was appointed to a NASA project in the Wayne Medical School of Detroit, Michigan. He and his young family then returned to Sydney where Graeme spent three years at Sydney University, a post-doctoral position in Chemistry Department. He then spent three years at the University of NSW researching kidney dialysis. Following this, his research led him to St Vincent’s Hospital, running the Flow Cytometry Unit. There he was involved in research into AIDS and cancer, as well as monitoring the immune therapy in patients undergoing heart transplants.

Well respected in his field, in 1988 Graeme joined Coulter Electronics as their Flow Cytometry Technical Representative and later worked as a Biochemist/Technical Specialist at BD Biosciences in Queensland.

Graeme was married to Elizabeth in 1966 and they had four sons.

Graeme passed away 3 December 2021, aged 79 years.
