CUMMING, George Gordon (1867-1934)


George Cumming, born on was educated at Geelong College as a boarder after his enrolment on 25 April 1881. His entry address was 'Waiora' in Dandenong Rd, Caulfield. He was still at the College in 1885 when he bacame a member of the 1st Football XVIII that year. In 1883, he was awarded 1st Prize in Arithmetic in the 3rd Class. In 1885, he was awarded 2nd Prize in Algebra in the 4th Class Lower Division and 2nd Prize in French in the 3rd Class, Lower Division.

George was the second of nine children of Thomas Forrest Cumming, an Old Scotch Collegian and pastoralist, and Selina nee Dowling and had been born at Stony Point Station, Darlington on 4 March 1867. After leaving College he worked in the pastoral industry, managing Arumpo Station for his father, then Cobram Station with his brother-in-law, Sir Rupert Clarke, and later Rupertswood Estate.

He served in the Great War in Rabaul for two years with the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force, embarking on SS Morinda on 11 August 1915. He was then at the Remount Depot until the end of the war.

His nephew, Douglas Anderson Cumming (No 410312), also attended Geelong College. He became a Flying Officer with 450 Squadron, RAAF, during World War II but was killed in action over Italy on 29 May 1944. He was buried in Morolo Civil Cemetery, Italy, these graves were later centralised into Cassino War Cemetery - Grave X.K.6.
