CUMMINGS, Edward Howard Lane (1894-1942)


Edward Cummings enrolled at Geelong College in February 1910 leaving on 4 July 1912. At enrolment, his address was Church Square, St Leonard's Avenue, St Kilda. He had previously attended Melbourne Grammar School from 1907 to 1909.

George was born at Ballarat in 1894, the son of George Cummings and Alice Maud nee Hammond.

He enlisted in the AIF on 30 June 1916, and embarked on 22 December 1916 on HMAT A34 Persic as a Driver with the 2nd Mechanical Transport Company. Arriving in France in March 1917, he took part in the Battle of Ypres in October. In June 1918 he transferred to 6th Mechanical Transport Company, and took part in the Somme offensive. He returned to Australia, and was discharged on 27 November 1919.

Edward Cummings died in 1942.

His brother, Clifford Lane Cummings, an architectural student, of St Kilda, enlisted on 16 September 1915 with the 1st Divisional Supply Column becoming a Lance Corporal, and served throughout the Great War. He returned to Australia on 5 April 1919.
