DICKSON, Douglas (1898-1974)


Douglas Dickson was born on the 18 February 1898, the son of James Dickson and Mary Glass nee Cramond, of Guthrie, Warrnambool. He was educated at Camperdown Grammar School, and enrolled by J Guthrie at Geelong College on 4 February 1913 entering Class IVM. He left College in December that same year. He then went to Warrnambool Agricultural High School.

He enlisted (No 3499) on 28 June 1917, aged 19, at Warrnambool, and embarked on HMAT A16 Port Melbourne on 16 July 1917, with the 9th Reinforcement Group to 60 Battalion. Corporal Douglas Dickson transferred to 59 Battalion, and served through the last year of the war in France.

Returned to Australia, he embarked on 24 July 1919. During the post-war years he served for a time as Secretary of the 60 Battalion Association.

He died on 27 April 1974.

His family was severely dealt with by the Great War as he lost a brother, Private R J Dickson, and two uncles, Private C H Cramond, and Trooper M J Dickson, 10th Light Horse. Doug’s brother Captain Ronald James Dickson, 60 Battalion, was wounded on 12 May 1917 at Bullecourt, he served throughout the remainder of the war, returning to Australia on 13 April 1919.

His brother, David Murray Dickson, was also educated at Geelong College.
