DIXON, Alfred Bertie (1881-1941)
Alfred Bertie Dixon was born on 17 June 1881, the son of Phillip Garnet Dixon and Helen Florence nee Osgood, of Hawthorn, Victoria.
He was enrolled at Geelong College on 9 February 1897 becoming a member of both the 1st Cricket XI and 1st Football XVIII in 1897 and 1898. Though enrolled by 'Mrs Dixon' his address was given as care of Mrs Lawson of 'Craigrothie', Mary St, Grace Park, Hawthorn. At College, he gained the following class awards:
1897, 1st, Algebra, University Class.
1898, 1st, Chemistry, Post Matriculation.
1898, 1st, Physics, Post Matriculation.
He went on to Melbourne and Edinburgh Universities, then to the Royal Military College, Duntroon, in 1916. He was working as a grain-merchant during World War I, when he enlisted in the AIF on 23 December 1915. In 1916, he married Kathleen Isabella Callaway, the daughter of William Charles and Isabella Stockman Callaway, of Timboon, and their daughter, Dorothea Margaret, was born in East Melbourne in 1917.
He was promoted 2nd Lieutenant on 24 November 1916 before he embarked from Sydney for France with 58 Battalion (9th Reinforcement Group) on HMAT A16 Port Melbourne on 16 July 1917, arriving in Liverpool on 16 September. He was at the Instructor School at Kandahar Barracks, Tidworth, before embarking for France on 13 December. He served in France until he was invalided back to Australia on HMT Runic, embarking on 23 September 1918.
He died on 25 May 1941. The death of A B Dixon (1899) was noted in Pegasus in June 1946.
