ELVINS, Rev James Weston (1927-2016)


Rev James Weston Elvins, born on 9 August 1927, became a day student at Geelong College from 15 February 1933 to December 1944.

After leaving College he was first apprenticed as an accountant in Geelong but, at the age of 23, entered Ormond College to study Theology. He graduated in 1958 and was ordained as a Methodist Minister in the Myrtleford-Bright parish, later working at Stawell and Koonung Heights and with the Wesley Central Mission. In 1989 he was employed by Equity Trustees and, from 1998-2001, with International Social Services. He continued to provide part-time ministry in many congregations including Cranbourne, Dandenong North, St Columba's, Balwyn, Tallangatta and Grove, Box Hill.

His community activities were extensive with involvements as Lifeline National Treasurer and Counsellor; Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture; Auditor and Assistant Treasurer for Religions for Peace and Oxfam.

A keen sportsman at College he continued playing tennis throughout his life. He was proud to complete a leg of the Queen's Baton Relay for the 2006 Commonwealth Games when Mont Albert Probus Club honoured and nominated him for his community service.

Rev Weston died at Kew on 16 May 2016.

His father, H F Herbert Elvins (1875-1960), OGC 1904, practised in Geelong and was a member of the Morongo School Council for many years.
