EWART, John Ferguson OAM (1923-1990)
John Ferguson Ewart, local government councillor and farmer, and familiarly known as ‘Erg’ was born at Nagambie to William Henry Ewart and Ada May nee Ferguson. He first went to Dargalang Primary School before becoming a boarder at Geelong College from 1937 to 1941. According to J M Ferguson, he regularly topped the English classes as a student and in 1941 gained honours in English and European History. In his final year he became vice-captain of Morrison House, a Cadet Corps corporal and played in the 1st Football Team. He was also a Pegasus committee member and a member of the House of Guilds Council.
He served for over forty years on the Goulburn Shire Council and, as a member of the vociferous Goulburn Group fought municipal amalgamation during the 1980s. Despite this opposition to government policy he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia ‘in recognition of service to the community and local government’ in 1989.
