GLASSFORD, Dr Ian Gordon (1871-1945)

Ian Gordon Glassford aka John (Football, 1890).


Medical practitioner, Ian Glassford, was born at Newburn Park, Maffra on 9 November 1871 and became a boarder at the Geelong College in 1882 and from 1885 to 1891. He was the son of Harry Gordon Glassford, originally of Matahanui, Otago, NZ and Martha Bertina nee Johnson.


Ian Glassford was a well-known sportsman and excelled at tennis. At College he was a member of the 1st Football XVIII from 1889 to 1891 and the 1st Cricket XI from 1888 to 1891. At College, the doubles tennis pair, Glassford and Kearney were regarded as nearly invincible doubles tennis players. He was also a committee member of the OGCA from 1920 to 1922 and a Vice-President in 1923.
