GLOVER, Howard John (1917-2002)

GLOVER, Howard John (1917-2002)

Born on 26 April 1917 at Geelong, the son of Cyrus Herbert Glover and Helen Edina (nee McRae) Glover, Howard John Glover was enrolled at Geelong College as a day student on 3 February 1927 commencing in the Preparatory School. He left in December 1932 after completing Form VI. He was recorded at the time of his enrolment as previously attending North Geelong State School and residing at 21 Bell Parade, North Geelong. He was awarded Dux of the Preparatory School in 1928. At the College Sports of 7 October 1932 he ran third in the Under 16 880 yards off a handicap of 55 yards.

In June 1937 Pegasus noted 'Howard Glover was a member of the Corio maiden eight coached by Mr Chas. Saleh, which was so successful at this season's regattas.'

In June 1939 Pegasus noted 'Howard Glover achieved an oarsman's ambition by being selected for the Victorian crew which contested the King's Cup in Brisbane.' Howard is known to have assisted with coaching of College crews in 1943 and was a committee member of the Old Geelong Collegians' Association (OGCA) from about 1945 to 1962.

On 19 September 1940, he married Marjorie Grace Dolley, the daughter of Percy Edward Dolley and Grace (nee Thomas) Dolley, of Geelong.

During World War II, he enlisted (No. 400086) on 27 May 1940 in the RAAF, training at ITS (Somers), No.3 EFTS (Essendon) and No.1 SFTS (Point Cook), before his discharge as Sergeant H J Glover on 17 March 1941. He had transferred to Seaplane Training Flight, Rathmines, to undergo a Seaplane Conversion Course in January 1941, and been awarded his Flying Badge. He applied for three months' leave in order to attend to his father's affairs (a skin exporting business) as his father was ill, and Sgt Glover felt an obligation to attend to these matters. After an interview between the Air Member for Personnel, Sgt Glover and his uncle, Arthur Glover, it was decided to give Sgt Glover his discharge.

Ian Hawthorne in 'One Man's Eye' noted:
'He spent many years on Geelong West and Geelong City Councils, and in a long and distinguished career he has been Chairman of the Saleyards Committee, Kardinia Park Memorial Swimming Pool, Geelong Hospital Gala Board, Geelong Area Scout Association and Geelong 150th Anniversary Committee.'

He died at Geelong on 22 July 2002 and was interred in the East Geelong Cemetery.

His father, Cyrus Herbert Glover (1887-1941), and brother, Herbert Alexander 'Alan' Glover (1923-2017) were also educated at Geelong College.
