'Rob' Grant

Olympic Javelinist, Bob Grant was born at Shepparton and attended the Geelong College as a boarder from 1947 to 1949 participating in the Relay Team in 1948 and 1949. A keen sportsman, he was for many years the Secretary of the Association of Public Schools (APS) before becoming the first Development Officer of the Geelong College Foundation from 1987 to 1993.

Prior to becoming a student at the Geelong College he received schooling in Ouyen, Victoria. Afterwards he attended Scotch College for three years until 1953 and was a School Prefect in his final two years. He was an all-round athlete and played in the Scotch College 1st Football XVIII from 1951 to 1953 becoming its Vice-Captain in 1953. He also rowed in the 1st Rowing VIII in the victorious Head of the River crew of 1952 and again rowed in 1953. He was later was to become involved with the Geelong Rowing Association.

After training as a primary teacher, Robert taught at Scotch College from 1960-1986 and as head of Physical Education from 1964. Robert’s diverse athletics talents were also displayed through competition in the 1956 Melbourne OLYMPIC GAMES in the javelin in which he ranked 16 out of 25 competitors with a throw of 65.7m only 25 cm short of the finalist’ throw.

'Bob' Grant was inducted into the Old Geelong Collegians' Association (OGCA) Notables Gallery at Geelong College in October 2014.
