Frederick William Grutzner was born at Geelong on 20 May 1887 and became a day student at Geelong College in 1900. His parents were Frederick William Grutzner and Annie Florence, (nee McDonald) and his address at enrolment was Fairview St, Newtown.


He was School Dux in 1905, winner of the Geelong College Exit Scholarship, and a corporal in the College Cadet Corps in 1905. Frederick Grutzner's crew won the Senior Four's competition at the College Regatta on the Barwon River. Two years earlier in 1903, with C Thompson, he came second in the Senior Manx Race at the College sports - one of the novelty events.

He is listed with the following academic awards in the Geelong College Annual Reports from 1900 to 1905:

His son, Patrick William Grutzner (1925-2017) was also educated at Geelong College.
