H V McKAY SCHOLARSHIP

H V McKAY SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was awarded by the College to the sons of clergymen and first awarded in 1938. It is no longer offered.

In 1944, it was referred to as a boarding scholarship and in 1945 it was noted as being valued at '100 pounds for three years' . In the December, 1937 issue of Pegasus Magazine the Principal, Francis Roland declared that 'I am very glad to be able to announce that after some years of discussion, the H V McKay Trust have acceded very generously to my request for additional scholarships for ministers' sons, and have promised to ourselves and to Scotch College three scholarships each, which will together amount by the third year to £600 per annum, and provide for the full expenses of six ministers' sons. The term of each scholarship is three years.'

Hugh Victor McKay (1865-1926), after whom the scholarship was named, built one of the first stripper-harvesters to be manufactured and sold in Australia in about 1886. After virtual bankruptcy in the early 1890s he designed the immensely successful 'Sunshine Harvester' and developed his manufacturing business into the 'Sunshine Harvestor Co' which became, during the 1920s, one of Australia's largest manufacturing businesses. The factory sprawled over 30 acres in Braybrook (later renamed Sunshine) with an estimated 2500 employees. Following his death the H V McKay Charitable Trust was established with the income from 100,000 shares in the Sunshine Harvester Co.
