HIGGINS, Douglas Vernon (1917-1943)Flight Sergeant Douglas Veron Higgins of 73 (Reserve) Squadron died in an aircraft accident about ten miles west of Ulladulla, NSW on 9 September 1943. He was based at Nowra and was buried at Nowra War Cemetery.
He was the youngest of five brothers born to Frank Vernon Higgins and Gertrude Mary nee James and attended Geelong College from 1927 to 1933. After leaving School he joined the stock department of Dennys Lascelles Ltd, Geelong. A keen amateur sportsman, he was active in cricket, football, baseball and tennis.
He enlisted in the RAAF in 1940, serving in Malaya and escaping after the fall of Singapore. His four brothers Geoffrey Frank Higgins (1909-1993), Trevenen David Higgins (1912-2000), Russell James Higgins (1914-1996) and Keith Alexander Higgins (1915- 2002) also attended the School. The
Douglas Higgins Memorial Prize was named after him.
