D Hinchliffe, 1956


David Alan Hinchliffe was born 12 January 1939 to Alan Richards (OGC 1928) and Emma Hinchliffe. He began his schooling at The Geelong College from Kindergarten in 1943. David’s skill as a sports person were revealed from an early age. He won the Under 7 age group 50 yards sprint and potato race in 1945. He captained the Under 10 football team in 1949, Under 11 cricket and football teams in 1950, and would be a regular member of the teams in the following years.

In 1954 David won the ER Sparrow Cup and was a member of the Athletics and U16 Football teams. In 1955 he would go on to serve on the 1st XI Cricket, 1st XVIII Football and Athletics teams. In his final year at school he Captained the 1st XVIII team and was a member of the 1st XI Cricket team. He was in Shannon House and served in the Cadets.

Following school David played for the Geelong Amateurs and was a member of the Victorian Amateur Football Team. He played in the Newtown cricket team, who were the 1959-60 premiers. He was also selected as a bowler with Geelong’s successful Country Week eleven.

In 1960 David played 3 games for the Geelong Football Club in the VFL.

David would go on to work in sales, moving to Kenmore in Queensland by 1972. He was married to Judy and they had two children.

His brothers John (OGC 1958) and Timothy (OGC 1959) also attended The Geelong College.

David passed away 27 September 2020 at Surfers Paradise, aged 81 years.
