In 1962, the College fielded its first hockey team with a report and image of the 1st Hockey Team in Pegasus of 1962. Practices were held on the original Preparatory School ground at Senior School Campus (now Rankin Field) and at the new Preparatory School ovals.

In 1969, Ad Astra reported that ‘for the first time College played in the Independent Schools’ hockey. Results at times were more salutary than satisfactory, but the season ended with a maiden victory and a draw.’

In 1976 a girls' hockey team was entered for the first time in C Grade of the Geelong Women's Hockey Association at Stead Park. There was also a junior team in 1976. Both girls' teams played several other schools including a 'round robin' at Morongo College.

In August 1991, Ad Astra noted that a girl’s team had played in the APS competition. In 1997, Rankin Field on the site of the original Preparatory School Oval was developed using artificial turf to become the main Hockey playing field. A sports trophy known as the The Geelong College Senior School Hockey Champions, donated by the Senior School Parents’ Association in the year 2000, was awarded annually to the winning House in the Senior School competition.
