HODGES, Henry Gordon (1886-1939)

HODGES, Henry Gordon (1886-1939)

Henry Hodges was born on 15 August 1886 or ? 11 November 1886, the second of five children of Isaac George Hodges (of the family of Hodges Brewery Geelong) and Helen nee Miller.

He was enrolled as a day student in 1899 and appears to have been at the School until 1903 although he may be confused with another student at this time, Harry George Hodges (1891-1952). At enrolment, his address was 'Thinleith', Myers Street, Geelong. He played in the 1st Football XVIII in 1907 and 1908 and is noted as winning the following awards: 1902 - Special prize, Upper 4th Class; 1903 - 2nd, Euclid, Upper 4th Class; 1903 - 1st, French, Upper 4th Class. He stated on his Attestation Papers that he had been in the Geelong College cadets for 4 years, finishing up in the Senior Cadets. Pegasus notes him as a member of the Old Collegian Football Team in the annual match with the College team in 1909,

He enlisted (No 2142) in the AIF on 9 March 1915 in the 7th Australian Infantry Battalion (6th Reinforcement Group) embarking on HMAT A62 Wandilla on 17 June 1915 for overseas service at Gallipoli where he was wounded at Lone Pine and in France before transferring to the Australian Army Medical Corps (AAMC) Dental Corps in February 1918. Pegasus reported, 'Acting-Sergeant Gordon Hodges is in the Dental Corps in France.' He later was promoted to E R Corporal. Hodges returned to Australia, embarking on 18 January 1919.

He died as the result of a car accident, near Horsham, in November 1939. According to The Argus (Melbourne) in an item, at the time of his death, he had been manager of the English, Scottish and Australian Bank (ES&A) at Horsham for 13 years. He was survived by his widow, Harriet nee Nind whom he had married in 1919 and had two children.

His brothers, Leslie George Hodges (1892-1960), and Robert Isaac Hodges (1895-1919), were also educated at Geelong College.
