HOPE, Dr William Waugh (1866-1942)


William Hope was born at Darriwill, Moorabool, on 23 January 1866, the sixth son of George Hope and Marianne nee Hassall.

He entered Geelong College in 1878 and he was in the 1st XVIII in his last year, 1883. He went on to The University of Melbourne, graduating MB BS, and practised his profession at Hamilton, Colac, Geelong and Birregurra.

He was a Lieutenant in the Victorian Mounted Rifles in 1903 and, having transferred to the 11th Light Horse later that year, became Major-in-Command of the unit from 1906 until 1910. He volunteered for service in the Great War, and was appointed Camp Commandant.

Dr William Hope died in 1942, aged 77, and was buried in Geelong Eastern Cemetery.
