Ian Hore-Lacy was a teacher at The Geelong College 1971-1973. A science teacher, he founded the biology department and became Senior Biology Master. He was also Morrison House, Assistant Master 1971 and Senior Resident Group Coordinator 1972-3. He finished up at the end of 1973, taking up a position at Conzinc Rio Tinto as an environmental scientist.

Ian would go on to become a respected Australian nuclear industry communicator and author. In 1995 he was appointed General Manager of the Uranium Information Centre then in 2001 joined World Nuclear Association as Director for Public Communications, and later working as Senior Research Analyst. More recently, he became Senior Advisor to the Director-General.

With a Masters and Honours degree in Science, Ian was an appealing teaching prospect for the then Principal, Peter Thwaites. After a few years and despite his keen interest in science education, Ian took the position at Conzinc Rio Tinto and Principal Thwaites was sorry to see him go: ‘We will be sorry to see your departure from the staff here, but have always known that you might not be with us for a great length of time’ (10/12/1973). Ian too was thankful for his time at the school and his fellow staff members, ‘It was a wonderful few years from which I gained a great deal and I am very grateful for it,’ (21/2/1976).

Ian published six book on nuclear energy, sustainability and Christianity. In 2006 he received the WNA Award for Distinguished Contribution to the Peaceful Worldwide Use of Nuclear Technology for his services as an educator on nuclear energy.

Ian passed away 2 December 2021, aged 81 years. He is survived by wife Libby, four children and five grandchildren.
