HOWARD HITCHCOCK SCHOLARSHIP
The Howard Hitchcock Scholarship is a currently available award and is offered irregularly to a student entering Year 11 who shows outstanding talent in any aspect of the Visual Arts and who is undertaking two Arts subjects in Year 11 and Year 12. It is awarded on the basis of a portfolio to be judged by a panel of teachers led by the College Head of Fine and Applied Arts.
Hitchcock Scholarships in various forms have been awarded since at least 1939. The Howard Hitchcock Scholarship was funded by the Hitchcock Bequest which was established by the former well-known businessman, parliamentarian and Mayor of Geelong, Howard Hitchcock (1866-1932).
Hitchcock was born to George Mitchelmore Hitchcock and Annie, née Lowe in Geelong, Victoria on 31 March 1866. He first worked as an assistant in the family firm, Bright and Hitchcocks, later becoming a junior partner in the company. He became a managing director in 1912 when his father died. He sold the company in 1926. One of the trustees of the Hitchcock Bequest was Ken Nall (1924-2011), an Old Collegian, who formerly worked for the Company, Bright and Hitchcock.
