For his service to the community, Ian Howden (OGC 1946) was honoured in the Queen's Birthday Awards of June 2017 with the Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia 'for service to the community through a range of roles'

Chairman, Group Study Exchange Committee, 1993-1994. Former Chairman, District Assembly Organising Committee, 2006.
Volunteer, Fourth Avenue in Motion (FAIM) visit to Kokoda, Papua New Guinea to construct a hospital, 1994.

Rotary Club of Turramurra:
Chair, Gampong Anak Orphanage and Community Centre Project (now the Gampong Anak Children's Village), Banda Aceh, Indonesia, 2004-2010, in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Jakarta Gambir.
Founder, Turramurra Tsunami Disaster Committee, 2004. Past Chair, Eulowirree Project, 'for 5 years'.
