HOWELL, Richard Samuel (1902-1994)

Richard Samuel Howell became a missionary in the Belgian Congo (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo), where, over a period of thirty years, he established twenty-eight schools. He was knighted by the Belgian Government in 1960 in recognition of his long service to education.

Richard, the son of Samuel Howell and Olive Wilhelmina nee Beath was a day student at the College from 1915 to 1918 and was a member of the 1915 Athletics Team.

His brothers, David Livingstone Beath Howell (1902-1997); Francis Reginald Howell (1906-1970) and Geoffrey Gordon Howell (1907-2003) all attended the Geelong College.
