HURST, Evelyn Joseph (1894-1945)


Evelyn Hurst was born 29 January 1894, the son of Joseph Richard Hurst and Margaret Morten nee Todd. He was enrolled at Geelong College as a day student in 1902. His entry address was listed as Skene Street, Geelong. He left in 1910.

According to the Annual Report Prize Lists he won the following awardsat Geelong College:
1908 2nd, Arithmetic, Middle 4th Form.
1908 1st, Writing, Middle 4th Form.

He was employed as a motor mechanic when he enlisted (No 13061) as a driver with the 1st Auxiliary Motor Transport Company, AIF on 13 September 1916, having been rejected five times previously. He embarked for France on HMAT A34 Persic on 22 December 1916. He was wounded when he caught his leg between the spokes of a wagon wheel, and tore the flesh from the outer side of his thigh. Hurst returned to Australia on HMT Nestor, embarking on 22 July 1917.

His brothers, Leslie Norman Hurst (1886-1937) and Harold Edward Hurst (1888-1972) were also educated at Geelong College.
