JONES, Randell Ward (1890-1953)


Randell Ward Jones was born 30 June 1890, the son of William Ward Jones and Hilda nee Knox. He was enrolled at Geelong College as a boarder in 1904. At the time he was living at Daly St, Daylesford. He probably left College in 1905.

He is known to have received the following awards at Geelong College:
1904 2nd, Geography, Upper 4th Form;
1904 1st, Algebra, Middle 4th Form;
1904 1st, Latin, Middle 4th Form;
1904 1st, French, Upper 4th Form;
1905 1st, English, University Form A

He worked as a chauffeur before the war. He was surgically treated for tuberculosis in December 1914 and subsequently suffered bouts of ongoing chest pain. He enlisted (No 3847) in the AIF, 24 Battalion; 9th Reinforcement Group on 21 September 1915, embarked for Egypt on HMAT A69 Warilda on 8 February 1916 and was taken on strength on the 16 May 1916. Jones was wounded in action in June 1916, suffering a gunshot wound to his right leg which required him to be evacuated to Chatham Military Hospital on 9 June. Jones was then transferred to 2 Communications Depot in England, where he suffered from his wounds, complaining in June 1917 of chest pains and tiredness. He returned to Australia on HMT Durham Castle, embarking on 10 March 1918.
