KING, John (1898-1988)
John King was born on 7 January 1898, the son of John Henry King and Rachel, nee Thompson of Noble Street, Newtown, He was taught by a governess prior to his enrolment at Geelong College in February 1910. He left in May 1914. His address at enrolment was Noble St, Newtown, Geelong.
During World War I he enlisted (No 36631) in the AIF at Sydney on 12 February 1917. He embarked from Sydney as a Driver with the 4th Division Ammunition Column (29th Artillery Reinforcement Group) on HMAT A15 Port Sydney on 5 November 1917. He returned to Australia, embarking on 19 June 1919.
He again served (No V80984) with the army during World War II from 7 October 1939, becoming a Sergeant in the Australian Army Pay Corps in New Guinea (December 1944-October 1945). He was discharged on 7 November 1945. In 1936, he had married Isabelle Margaret Scott, the daughter of David and Elizabeth Scott of Richmond.
