KNIGHT, Ronald Beamish (1894-1980)


Ronald Beamish Knight was born on 6 October 1894, the son of Cecil Roberts Knight and Ellen Henrietta nee Beamish. He was enrolled at Geelong College in 1904 with an address at the time, of Sandy Bay, Hobart.

During World War I he enlisted (No 990) in the AIF on 16 September 1914, embarking for Egypt on HMAT A9 Shropshire on 20 October 1914, and ultimately Gallipoli with the Brigade Ammunition Column. He served as a Gunner with 2 Field Artillery Brigade. From France he was evacuated by HS Brighton from Calais, suffering severe jaundice, on 4 August 1916. After further service in France he returned to Australia, embarking three days before the Armistice was signed, on 8 November 1918, having taken advantage of ‘Special 1914 Leave’.

He died on 4 July 1980.

His brothers, Frank Russell Knight (1890-1936), and Cecil Roberts Knight (1900-1972), were also educated at Geelong College.
