Harvey Lade. (WW II).
Harvey Lade, Company Director, Shipping Manager and Executive, born in Deniliquin, NSW, was the son of Allen Wettenhall Lade and Ella nee Woodward and spent much of his working life overseas.
He was Chairman of the Straits/Aust Shipping Conference, Singapore from 1960-1966; a Representative of the Far Eastern Freight Conference, Kuala Lumpur 1966-1974; and Chairman of the NZ East Asia Shipping Conference, Wellington from 1974-1980. He later became executive officer of the Victorian Retirement Association in Melbourne.
During World War II he enlisted on 4 September, 1942 in the RAAF and served as a pilot in 148 Squadron at Brindisi, Italy. He was discharged from the RAAF on 19 March, 1946.
Harvey was well known among Old Collegians, usually as ‘Digger' and was a devoted genealogist. He was educated as a boarder at the College from 1934 to 1941 and played cricket in the 2nd XI, and football and athletics with the Under 16 teams, but he was often noted for his performances in the chorus of the Glee Club Gilbert and Sullivan productions. Patrick Grutzner, recalled that on one occasion he was listening to the Pirates of Penzance (1940) and Harvey sang,
'Why would a fly’s football be distinctly heard?', only to roar with laughter when told the actual words were, that 'a fly’s footfall be distinctly heard'. Harvey of
Siapu, Mt Eliza died on 18 October 2009. His sons, Mark, and Dr Stephen Lade, were also educated at College.
