David Lamont, CFO at global company BHP, has worked in financial management for multinational companies for many years.

David was recently appointed Chief Financial Officer of BHP as well as joining their Executive Leadership team. A familiar face at BHP, David has worked in a number of roles across divisions at the company, including CFO of BHP Billiton’s Energy Coal and Carbon Steel Manufacturing Group in the early 2000s.

After five years at BHP, David has built his global finance and leadership. In 2006 he was appointed Executive Director at PaperlinX Limited, then CFO of miner Oz Minerals 2008-2009. He served as the CFO of Minerals and Metals Group from its formation in June 2009 until 2010, then held CFO and Executive Director positions to 2015.

His track record as a global CFO led to his appointment as CFO at CSL, the Australian Commonwealth Serum Laboratories biopharmaceutical company in 2016, a position he held before rejoining BHP in 2020.

In June 2020, of his appointment at BHP, David said: “I am delighted to rejoin one of the best companies in the world. BHP has strong values and a robust financial position, making this an exciting opportunity to be part of a team that can generate returns to shareholders over the long term and make a positive difference to local communities and global markets.”

This community mindset has seen David strive to be leader in his field and mentor to others. David has been a Director at the Financial Executives Institute of Australia since 2013. The institute aims to support the careers of CFOs and finance executives.

After graduating from Deakin University with a Bachelor of Commerce, Mr Lamont became a chartered accountant, working in audit with Deloitte. He then pursued a corporate career, joining ICI Australia, later to become Orica. His first head of finance role was at Incitec Pivot.

David attended The Geelong College from 1976-1982, from Grade 6 to Form VI. At Senior School he was part of Athletics Team, and 1st XVIII football team in 1981-1982. He also received multiple Coles House Colours for football, athletics and hockey, as well as Junior House Colours.

David is married to Jacqui and they have two daughters. David’s father Ross OGC 1949 and brothers Stephen OGC 1980 and Tony OGC 1986 also attended the College.
