LONGDEN, Walter Campbell (1858-1920)Enrolment Register Detail, 1871 p36. |
Walter Longden is listed in the 1871 Enrolment Register as present at the newly built Geelong College on 31 January 1871, though it is probably the same Walter who appears in the Annual report prize lists from 1869 suggesting he was enrolled in at least 1869. A second enrolment for a Walter Longden appears in the Enrolment Register for the 22 April 1877 without any other details and this may again be the same Walter returning to the College.
The birth date listed in the 1871 Enrolment Register is probably erroneous as there is a birth notice in
The Argus newspaper of 27 May 1858 listing his birth. He was a member of the Geelong College 1st Football XX in 1877 and 1878 and the 1st Cricket XI in 1877. He played for the Geelong Football Club in 1874 in the VFA.
He gained the following academic awards:
1869, 1st, Scripture History, 1st Class.
1871, 2nd, Geography, 3rd Class.
1876, 4th, English, 3rd Class.
1876, 3rd, Algebra, 2nd Class.
1876, 1st, Euclid, 2nd Class.
His four brothers,
Herbert Longden (1855-1918),
Edward Wrixon Longden (1856-?),
Arthur Longden (1861-1941), and
Frank Reginald Longden (1862-1938), and son,
Archibald Duncan Munro Longden (1905-1972) were also educated at Geelong College.
