Jong-Min Lee (Tennis 1995)
As one of the most successful junior tennis players to attend Geelong College, Min Lee won many of the major junior titles before heading off to the United States to play in the professional varsity competition.
He excelled as a doubles player and while being coached by Don Cameron won the ‘16 and under’ and the ‘18 and under Victorian State Championships in 1993 as well as the National ‘16 and under’ Singles and Doubles Championship in 1993. He again won the ‘18 and under’ Singles Championship in 1994. In 1995, with Luke Borgeois he won the Australian Open Junior Doubles Championship as well as becoming Open Junior Singles runner-up to the German, Nicklas Kiefer. That same year, he also won the US Open Junior Doubles Championship; Second place in both the Doubles and Singles Open Junior titles in Japan and second in the Doubles Open Junior in Canada. In 1996, he represented South Korea in the Davis Cup and at the 1996
Olympic Games in Atlanta.
Lee was born in Seoul, South Korea in 1977 and was a day student at Geelong College from February 1993 to December 1995. He also attended Geelong Grammar School. He excelled at Tennis at the College in a way not seen at the School before and despite his youth was a member of the 1st Tennis Team from 1993 to 1996 and winner of the
T S Hawkes Memorial Trophy every year from 1993 to 1995.
He furthered his education at the University of Santa Barbara from 1997 to 1999 before being accepted into the University of California where he studied economics and played professionally as a mainstay for the Bruins, the UCLA Tennis Team. He was described as
‘right hander with naturally fluid strokes, great hands and quickness and backhand’ . Several times during his tennis career he has won accolades as an ‘All American’.
Jong-Min Lee was inducted into the OGCA Gallery of Notable Collegians in 2016. He was described by the OGCA as:
'An outstanding tennis player at the school, Jong-Min won the Hawkes Cup three times in the 1990s. In 1996, he represented South Korea in the Davis Cup and the Olympic Games in Atlanta.' Sources: Australian Open; Ad Astra July 2016 p44. OGC 1995.
