Industrial Relations Commission president, Justice Barry Maddern was a day student at the Geelong College, 1948-1954, after having previously attended Newtown State School. His parents were James Alexander Maddern and Lorna Margaret nee Kelly. His father James Alexander Maddern (1909-1965) attended the School from 1919 to 1924.

Justice Maddern was President, Commonwealth Conciliation and Arbitration Commission, from 1985 until in 1989 he was appointed president of its successor the Industrial Relations Commission (IRC). Justice Maddern began his career as an industrial relations officer with the Standard Vacum Refinery Company at Altona before joining Mobil Oil Australia in 1961 where he began studying law part-time. He was admitted to the Victorian Bar in 1967 and awarded Companion of the Order of Australia in 1992, for service to industrial relations as president of the Australian Industrial Relations Commission.

Hon Barry Maddern was inducted into the Old Geelong Collegians' Association (OGCA) Notables Gallery at Geelong College in 2011.
