George Martin.
Staff member, George Martin, was a long serving bursar from 1941 until 1965. He first worked in the Commercial Bank and was appointed to the School in 1941 following the resignation of Miss Reeves, however, he did not take up his duties until after the completion of his war service in 1945. From 1943 to 1945, he served in the RANVR in anti-submarine patrols with the Naval Auxiliary Patrol. He was discharged on 16 October, 1945.
After the war, the Bursars' Association came into existence and George was a foundation member. Later, in 1953-55 he was President and in 1966 he was made an Honorary Life Member. He retired as bursar on 31 December, 1965 but continued employment as an assistant for the next 2 years until the end of 1967.
George was the son of Zethus Samuel Martin (1871-1934), a former student of the College from 1886 and member of the 1st Football Team of 1887. George was also a prominent member of the Geelong Rifle Club and, after his retirement,
Ad Astra noted that he continued in the role of School Archivist,
‘examining and arranging the historical records of the College’ . At various times he was President of the Choral Society, St Andrew’s Brotherhood, and the Geelong Rifle Club for thirteen years. For over thirty years he was an Elder of the Church and for seven years of that also Session Clerk.
