Raymond Mathews, 1897. (Football).

Raymond Mathews became Manager of the Brisbane Branch of Howard Smith Ltd, a position from which he retired in about 1946. He died in Queensland.

Born on 28 February 1882, he was the son of parents, James Mathews of Latrobe Terrace and Emma Henrietta nee Matthews, The following obituary appeared in Pegasus in 1948: 'Ray Mathews, a Collegian of 1892-98, died on July 25 (1948). He was a member of the 1st Football XVIII, passed the matriculation examination, and on leaving school joined the staff of Howard Smith Ltd at Geelong. About this time he was one of Geelong's leading tennis players.'

'Ray' was listed as enrolling at the College on 25 July, 1893 as a day student and was a member of both the 1897 and 1898 1st Football Teams. In both years, the Football Teams won the Championship of the Schools Association of Victoria. Ray was also a lance-corporal in the College Cadet Corps. The Annual Report of 1898 listed him as matriculating the previous year.

A later report in Pegasus of 1909 listed him as one of the seven Old Collegians in the Barwon Maiden VIII at the recent Barwon Regatta. His two brothers Louis Campion Mathews (1876-1970) and George Hunter Mathews (1878-1945) also attended the College.
