MCDONALD, John (1937-2021)

John McDonald was born to John GB and Mary in 1937, at Shepparton. He was enrolled as a boarder at The Geelong College in 1951, starting in Form II. John’s father was former Premier of Victoria 1950-1952, Sir John Gladstone Black McDonald, MLA Goulburn Valley then Shepparton 1936-1955.

John enjoyed a number of sports during his time at the college, working his way up to the 1st XVII rowing crew in 1956 which won the Head of the River that year. He received Rowing Cap, House and School Colours and Rowing Honours for his contributions to rowing. John also played in the 3rd and 4th XVIII football teams, where he was vice-captain.

John was also in the cadets, reaching the rank of Under Officer and serving as Drum Major. In 1955 he was Mackie House Monitor then in 1956 served as School Prefect and vice-captain of Shannon House.

Following school John returned to Shepparton where he followed his father in becoming an orchardist, and married Diana.

John passed away 31 August 2021, aged 83 years.
