In the Australia Day Honours of 2019, Dr Stanley 'John' Menzies of Camperdown was awarded Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia in the general division
'for service to the communities of Western Victoria:' 'John' Menzies was educated at Geelong College from 1963 to December 1966. At College in 1966, he was a School Prefect, Mackie House Captain, Captain of the Swimming Team (member 1963-1965), member of the Athletics Team (1965-1966) and 1st Baseball Team (1963-1966), a Cadet Corps Sergeant, and awardee of
'The Dr Gus Kearney Memorial Prize' for all-round ability and service to the College. Mackie House also won
'The Stanley B Hamilton-Calvert Cup' for the Inter-House Competition and 'The G Logie Smith Shield' for Inter-House Music Competition in 1966. In 1965, 'John' had been awarded 'The J C Cunningham Trophy for the Open Weight Put' and had been a House Prefect. The College played in the Geelong baseball competition and 'John' was awarded Equal Best and Fairest in the Geelong Baseball Association Under 17 League.
His four children were all educated at Geelong College.
'John' attended the Geelong College and Geelong Grammar
Albert Centenary Reunion Dinner in France in 2017 and generously performed duty as the 'official' musician, leading the parade to the Reunion dinner, and sensitively playing the bagpipes at the wreath laying ceremony.
His great-uncle,
Dr John Rees Porter (1890-1969), a dedicated doctor, was a talented scholar and sportsman at Geelong College and attended the original Albert Reunion Dinner in 1917.
