MITCHELL, Walter Edward (1863–1917)

MITCHELL, Walter Edward (1863–1917)

Unlike his brothers, there is no Geelong College Enrolment Register entry for Walter Mitchell.

His son, Thomas Walter Mitchell (1906-1984), stated in a letter to the School in 1980 that his father attended Geelong College. The Geelong College Annual Report and Prize List of 1875 does disclose a Walter Mitchell as a Scripture prize winner; 3rd in English and 2nd in History in the 1st Class.

His brothers, Peter Stuckey Mitchell (1854–1921), Thomas William Mitchell (1857-1873), and John Francis Huon Mitchell (1859–1921), are all listed in the College Enrolment Register as attending Geelong College.

The following obituary was published in the Albury Banner newspaper:
'One of the best known pastoralists of the Upper Murray district, Mr. Walter E Mitchell, who had, in association with his brother, Mr Peter Mitchell, been famous in both States for the breeding of fat stock and thoroughbred horses, died in Sydney on Monday. He had not been well for some time. The deceased, who was aged about 50, was a son of the late Mr Thomas Mitchell, of Bringenbrong Station, who took up land on the Upper Murray over fifty years ago and improved Bringenbrong Station until it became one of the finest stations in New South Wales.

The deceased was a nephew of the late Mr James Mitchell, of Tabletop. The firm of Messrs P and W Mitchell owned Bringenbrong and Towong stations and other holdings attached to them, and it was only a couple of years ago that the partnership was dissolved, Mr Peter Mitchell retaining, the Bringenbrong section, on which, he had resided, and Mr Walter Mitchell taking over Towong estate, and remaining in residence at Towong House, Corryong, one of the most delightfully situated homes on the river.

The brothers Mitchell will be remembered best as the breeders and owners of 'Trafalgar', generally accepted as the best racehorse Australia ever produced. They were also the largest suppliers of fat stock to the Australian market, and from that occupation amassed immense wealth. About ten years ago the late Mr Walter Mitchell married Miss Dibbs, daughter of the general manager of the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney, by whom there is left issue one son and one daughter. Besides Mr Peter Mitchell, the deceased is survived by another brother, Mr J F Mitchell, of Khancoban, also by two sisters, Mrs Chisholm, wife of Dr Chisholm of Sydney, and Mrs Brown, of Melbourne. The deceased was best known in pastoral and racing circles and did not take, an active part in public affairs.'

Walter died on 18 September 1917.
