Robert McFarland, 1890. (Football).
Robert Percival McFarland of Oxley Station, Hay, NSW, son of Andrew McFarland and his wife Jane Archer, nee Dowling, was born on 29 May 1875. He died at Melbourne on 11 December 1956, aged 81 years.
At Geelong College, he was a boarder at the School from 1888 to 1893, in the heyday of College football, playing in the first team for four years, captain in his final year. He was also in the 1st Cricket XI, and outstanding at athletics, in which he and his three brothers all in turn won the Geelong College Cup. He was enrolled by Mrs McFarland of Thelangerin Station, near Hay, NSW.
Managing director for most of his life of the McFarland Pastoral Co., he was also by natural consequence a devotee of horses, a keen racing man, show horse judge and gun shot. He devoted much time to public affairs in the Hay district, serving over 30 years with Waradgery Shire Council, for two years as President. His son Andrew attended the College around 1930, and, in 1957 entered his own two sons in the Preparatory School.
