McLAUGHLIN, James (1856-1925)


In 1870, James McLaughlin was enrolled as a boarder at the Geelong College. Born on 1 May 1856 at Collingwood to parents John McLaughlin and Honora nee O’Keefe his address at the time of enrolment was the Colac Hotel, Colac, Victoria.

He is noted in the Annual Reports as gaining the following prizes:
1870 1st French 1st Class.
1870 1st Arithmetic 1st Class.
1870 2nd Mental Arithmetic.
1871 3rd Geography 6th Class.
1872 1st History 5th Class.

Pegasus in 1925 published his obituary: ‘James McLaughlin passed away on August 17th, after having been in ill-health for some years. James entered the College from Collac in 1871, at the age of 15 years. He afterwards matriculated in the same year as Henry Davidson, Henry O'Hara, Henry Upton, Tom Fender and five others. His articles were served with the legal firm of Taylor, Buckland and Gates, with which firm he was for many years associated before he began to practice on his own account, the firm being known as McLaughlin and Eaves.

He was a Vice-President of the Melbourne Cricket Club for more than 30 years, and, during the visit of the late Major Wardill to England as manager of an Australian XI., he acted as Hon. Secretary. He was the senior trustee of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, was interested in pastoral properties, and was identified with the Pastoralists' Association and the Sheep Breeders’·Association.’


At the time of his death on 17 August 1925, he was resident at Metung, Victoria.
