OVEREND, Stanton James MBE (1886-1955)

Stanton James Overend newspaper proprietor, was one of Gippsland's most widely known and respected citizens.

He had been born to parents Robert Stanton Overend and Adeline Cottle nee Gerrand and attended Geelong College from 1902 to 1903. His enrolment address was Sale, Victoria.

When he left the College in 1903 he went into the newspaper business, and from 1918 conducted the Gippsland Times. His wider interests included Rotary, racing administration, grazing and irrigation. He gave over thirty-five years of service to the Gippsland Hospital, with periods as president and treasurer. His work for the hospital was recognised when he was created a Member of the Order of the British Empire. He was the proprietor of newspapers in Sale and Maffra, was president of the Victorian Provincial Press Association, and also deeply interested in racing administration. He died at Sale.
