STOCK, Adolph Clifton (1878-1924)


Adolph Clinton Stock was born on 12 April 1878 in South Australia, the son of Robert Alfred Stock (1846-1904) and Elizabeth Mary nee Lewis (1846-1884).

He entered Geelong College as a boarder on 12 February 1894. His address at the time was 'East View', East Terrace, Adelaide, South Australia. He was a member of the 1st Football XVIII in 1896 and the 1st Cricket XI in 1895 and 1896.

He later attended the Adelaide School of Mines and was listed as attaining a third class pass in second year in Electric Engineering in 1898.

He married Joan Latimer Tait (c1897- ) daughter of George Dawson Tait at Christ Church, Lancaster Gate, Westminster, London on 9 May 1917. She remarried to John Henry Below of Wokingham Hospital, Berkshire though later divorced him. Her will cited her as formerly of 'Avenida Infante Santo. 368-5E Lisbon 3, Republic of Portugal'

During World War I, he was gazetted as a temporary second lieutenant on 17 November 1914.

The Catalog Notes associated with a photograph of Adolph Stock held by the State Library of South Australia includes the following:
'From information provided by researcher: Adolph Clifton Stock was third son of Robert Alfred Stock, chairman of directors of S.A. Brewing Company, and his wife Elizabeth Mary Lewis. He went to the Argentine to manage a large station, then went to England to enlist for service in an English regiment in World War One. The London Gazette 7 October 1915 has his appointment as 2nd Lieutenant in Buffs East Kent Regiment, 8 October 1915. (Birth not registered in S.A. but his four siblings born between 1870-1875.)'

His name is listed on the Geelong College Great War memorial Tablet as 'Stock, A. C.'

His brother, Leslie Gardiner Stock (1881-1941), was also educated at Geelong College.
