SUTHERLAND, Dr Peter William (1935-2017)


Peter Sutherland was enrolled at Geelong College as a boarder in Year 9 on 12 February 1949, leaving in December 1953. His address at the time of enrolment was 'The Manse' Noorat and he had previously attended Terang Higher Elementary School. He was born on 30 September 1935 to Reverend William Fraser (1895-1973) and his wife Mary Leeson nee Thorn. His father, known as 'Fraser' had been educated at Scotch College, Melbourne from 1909 to 1914.

Peter participated in a variety of activities at College. As a sportsman he was a member of the 3rd Football XVIII in 1952 and Vice-Captain of the 2nd Football XVIII in 1953. He was a member of Morrison House, School Prefect (1953), Mackie House Prefect (1952) and became a Corporal in the College Cadet Corps (1951). In other activities he was a member of the Music Committee in 1952 and 1953, the PFA Committee in 1952 and 1953 and its Secretary in 1953, a member of the House of Guilds Council and a Sub-Warden in 1953. Like his brother James, he was awarded the Robert Gillespie Prize (Senior) in 1953.

After leaving College he studied at Melbourne University gaining MD in 1964. He later worked in private practice and at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.


Peter died on 22 October 2017.

His brothers, James Fraser Sutherland (1933-1952), Thomas Remington Sutherland, and David Sutherland were also educated at Geelong College.
