Associate Professor 'Geoff' Quail received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2014 for his service to medicine, particularly through his work in dentistry.

Prof. Quail is a Monash University lecturer of more than 20 years' experience and was Monash's Head of Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery for 30 years from 1981 until 2011. Prof. Quail has lectured in the Department of Surgery at Monash University since 1999 and has been lecturing for more than 20 years at Melbourne University, Monash University and other Australian Institutions. He was the co-founder and orthodontist of the cleft palate unit at Monash fom 1966 to 1981.

He has been a member of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners since 1978 and chaired the Medical Education Committee. He has also been an executive member of Southern Health's Senior Medical Association for 10 years.

'Geoff' recently completed a Doctororate of Philosophy with a thesis entitled 'The Contribution of the Australian Military to the science of tropical medicine' . This marked his 60 year association with the University of Melbourne as a student, researcher and academic. Prof. Quail has been involved with the Australasian College of Tropical Medicine, the Australian Medical Council, the Specialist Royal Australian Air Force Reserve and the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital's emergency department during his career.

His Australia Day, 2014 award listing is as follows:

Orthodontist, Prince Henry's Hospital, 1965-1966.
Associate Professor, Department of Surgery, Monash University, since 1999; Lecturer, over 20 years.
Senior Lecturer, University of Melbourne.
Member, College Council, Australasian College of Tropical Medicine, 1996 - 2001 and since 2009; Foundation Fellow, since 1991.
Member, Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, since 1978; Chair, Medical
Education Committee, 1989-1991.
Chairman, Senior Medical Association, Southern Health, 2007-2009; Executive Member, for 10years.
Examiner, Australian Medical Council.
Wing Commander, Specialist Royal Australian Air Force Reserve, serving since 1981.
Acting Director, Emergency Department, Repatriation Hospital, Heidelberg,for 2 years.
Fellow, Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, since 1983.'


Prof. Quail attended Geelong College from 1943 to December 1951 and was a member of McArthur House leading their House Music in 1951. He participated in the Library, PFA, Pegasus (Editor 1951), and Tennis Committees, and played in the 2nd Football XVIII in 1950-51. He was a member of the Relay Team (Athletics) 1948-1951, the Tennis Teams of 1950 and 1951 and became a College Cadet Corps Sergeant in 1951.
