RICHARDSON, Frank Evan (1895-1962)


Frank Evan Richardson was born on 27 April 1895, the son of a former Mayor of Geelong, Horace Frank Richardson (1854-1935) and Edith Harriet nee Sommers (1860-1937).

He was educated at Geelong College entering in 1907, and leaving in 1913. His address at entry was Belmont, Geelong. He was a member of the College Athletics Team in 1910.

During World War I, he went to England at his own expense to enlist and obtained a commission in the 8th Cavalry Regiment, training at Curragh Camp, Ireland. He was transferred to 17th Lancers in May 1917, where he was promoted Lieutenant with the Reserve Cavalry Regiment attached Lancers. He was on service for three years, and had taken part in operations in the Cambrai sector, passing unscathed through several sharp engagements. He returned to Australia on HMT Megantic, embarking on 21 February 1920.

In 1929 he married Charlotte Meldrum nee Dobie (1902-1937) with whom he had three children. After his first wife's death, he married Clair Hilda nee Salmon (1903-2002) on 4 July 1938 at All Saints Church, Newtown.

He became Mayor of Geelong in 1948-1949

Frank Richardson, auctioneer of 17 Stephen St, Newtown died on 12 October 1963.

His name is listed as 'Richardson, F, E. on the Geelong College Great War Memorial Tablet and the Shire of South Barwon Honour Roll, Waurn Ponds Hall, Waurn Ponds.

His father, Horace Frank Richardson(1854-1935) and two sons by his first wife, John Meldrum Richardson (1930- ), and Peter Frank Richardson (1931-1993), were also educated at Geelong College.
