SALMON, William Arthur (1928-2018)


William Arthur 'Bill' Salmon was educated at Geelong College from 15 February 1940 to December 1945, intially as a day student, but from Term 1, 1941 as a boarder. He had previously been taught through Primary Correspondence School and his address at entry was 'Eddington', Camperdown. He was born at Geelong on 9 April 1928.

He rowed with the 1st VIII of 1945, and was a member of the Athletics Relay Team and Athletics Captain in 1945. He was also a lance-corporal with the College Cadet Corps. After leaving College, he studied art at Swinburne Technical College 1946-1949, George Bell School, Melbourne before moving to Italy and London where he studied life drawing at the Slade School of Art 1950-1952.

He returned to Adelaide and taught art before moving to Sydney where he taught life drawing at the National Art School. He took part in the Australian Broadcasting Commision's (ABC) 'Argonauts' radio show and interviwed prominent artists in the ABC television artists program.

He farmed in the foothills of the Blue Mountains and at Dungog, NSW and was a keen sailor, sailing single-handed up and down Australia's east coast.

'Bill' Salmon's work is represented in the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra and in State and Regional Galleries.

'Bill' died at Dungog on 27 October 2018.

His grandfather, Dr Henry Robert Salmon (1861-1910); father, John Walter Salmon (1889-1956); and brother, Brigadier John Robert Salmon CBE (1926-2013); were also educated at Geelong College.
